How Break & Working Time Is Calculated

The exact formulas Movermate uses to calculate total duration, break time, and net working time, and why timestamp rounding can affect what you see.

This article explains the math behind the numbers you see on a timesheet useful whenever a total doesn't seem to add up at first glance.

The Core Formulas

For a job or activity:

Total Duration = End Time − Start Time

Total Break Duration = total unique break time (overlapping breaks across a job and activity aren't counted twice)

Net Working Time = Total Duration − Total Break Duration

Worked Example

  • Job Start: 7:14 PM

  • Job End: 7:55 PM

  • Total Duration: 41 minutes

  • Break: 7:30–7:35 PM

  • Total Break: 5 minutes

  • Net Working Time: 36 minutes

Timestamp Precision & Rounding

Movermate calculates time using the actual recorded timestamps, down to the second. Rounding is only applied to the final displayed values — individual work and break periods themselves are never rounded separately. This is what keeps the total recorded time consistent with what's shown in the Daily Breakdown.

Why This Matters for Overlapping Breaks

When a job and an activity are active during overlapping periods, each can carry its own break record, but the shift-level break total only counts the time once — see the worked example in Managing Breaks in the Crew App for how that plays out minute-by-minute.

Where to Check This

  • Crew App: Time Sheet screen → Time Entries → Daily Breakdown

  • CRM: Timesheet table's Total/Break columns, or the Daily Breakdown on an individual entry (see Reviewing Break Data as a Manager)
